We have a fabulous nest of tables by the Swedish designer Bengt Ruda, made by Nordiska Kompaniet in the 1950s. Ruda went on to become one of the first designers to work for IKEA. The tables are in walnut veneer with solid beech legs. The legs are very sleek and form a shape rather like the Greek letter lambda. The manufacturer has not matched the veneers on each table, this gives a fascinating example of the variety of colours and figure which can be seen in walnut, the most beautiful of all woods. Particularly striking are the flashes of orange colour on the largest table.
The original lacquer was damaged and become a little dark and opaque with age, thus masking the true beauty of the walnut, so we completely stripped and re-polished the whole set which is now in excellent vintage condition. There remain some very slight marks which could not be removed and a very slight bubble in the veneer of the largest table. The photo shows a 5p coin used as a guide to the size of the bubble.
The whole set is amazingly stylish and elegant.
