This bow fronted burr walnut chest of drawers is most likely an 18th/19th Century piece.

It is a fabulous piece of English furniture, a very compact three drawer bow fronted chest. The finish on this piece was beyond repair, so we have completely stripped and French polished it, finishing with wax.  This has been done sympathetically, retaining as many marks, knocks and general signs of age as possible.

The backs, sides and bottom are made of oak, the fronts are pine faced with walnut veneer.  The grain of the bottoms runs side to side, with a central muntin for strength. The drawer fronts consist of burr walnut veneers, surrounded by a herringbone pattern of inlaid walnut, further surrounded by a cross grained inlay, all finished off with cocked beading.  The bottoms of the drawers are located in rebates formed by slips of oak glued to the insides of the drawer sides.  All of the above construction elements were introduced in the 18th century.  The escutcheons and handles are original.  There are no tell tale holes in the drawer fronts to indicate the handles have been replaced.  The handles are held in place by a very unusual split-pin  arrangement.  The drawers dovetails are lapped and are hand cut, the marking-out scratches made by the maker are clearly visible.  The tails are much wider than the pins, a sign of early construction.  During the mid 19th century dovetails became more finely cut with tails and pins roughly the same size.

The top consists of beautiful burr walnut veneers, very nicely book matched, surrounded by herringbone inlay and finished with cross grain walnut.  The veneers are showing a slight rippling effect which they often acquire with age.  The sides are walnut veneers, the back is the original pine.  The whole is supported on French feet which splay outwards to the side and are concave to the front.  This form was mainly used around 1780 to 1810.

This chest is a fine example of design and construction.  With its various elements of design it would have been an extremely fashionable, expensive and luxurious piece in its day.  The fact that it is bow fronted adds considerably to its desirability.
